GameStop: “Disc-based games will be around forever”

GameStop: “Disc-based games will be around forever”

Retail CEO Paul Raines not concerned about growth of digital

Despite the rise of digital downloads GameStop CEO Paul Raines is confident that physical products are here to stay, and that his company can find a way to make the best of both markets.

"Disc-based games will be around forever," he told Fortune.

"The market has seen physical music sales down 50 per cent from its peak and physical movie sales down 60 per cent from its peak, but even in a doomsday scenario, disc-based games will be around for a long time. I see a complimentary business where we sell discs plus download like the current console mode."

He also looked ahead to the launch of the virtual reality headsets and stated his intentions for the medium.

"Analysts believe there could be 10 million VR users by the end of 2016, and there are hardware forecasts of $30 billion by 2020. We're going to be the destination for VR."

NeoKylin: China Linux OS that Seriously Looks Like Windows XP

Do You Know: China has planned to eliminate all foreign Technologies and Services by 2020, just like Google and Facebook.
And it seems China in some years would be an entirely independent IT economy; building homegrown Mobile and computer devices, Operating Systems, Applications, Browsers and almost everything existing in the IT ecosystem.

Well, China was not at all happy when Microsoft finally announced the end of official support for Windows XP. At the time, Windows holded 91% of total market share, compared to just for Mac OS X and just 1% for Linux.

However, China wasn't interested to pay either for extended support for Windows XP or for switching to Windows 8. So, they decided to develop their own Operating System.

Yes, China has developed a Desktop Operating System named “NeoKylin” (and ‘Kylin’ in Chinese), tagged as a substitute to Windows XP by Quartz, who got an opportunity to have a hands-on experience of its “community version” OS.

NeoKylin is developed by Shanghai-based China Standard Software Company and already running on more than 40% of commercial units sold in the country by Dell.

NeoKylin, the Microsoft Windows XP replacement is similar in the following manner:
  • The complete user interface and essentials like Window’s control, XP’s classic start button and folder’s icon are exactly the same.
  • The folder names used are also same like: there’s a Recycle Bin, My Computer and Control Panel to name a few.
  • NeoShine Office Suite offering similar functionalities of Windows Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • The classic rolling-hills-and-clouds desktop Wallpaper as was in XP gets a new face with qilin, the mythical chimera-like beast that the OS is named after.
  • NeoKylin has Built-in Linux Terminal
Moreover, the Chinese OS has something more on board i.e. Linux terminal.

Yes, the Linux terminal also exists where commands can be run, and information about the OS can be captured from it.

The operating system comes with pre-installed applications like:
  • Firefox for web browsing
  • A music player
  • An open-source image editor GIMP
  • A calculator

Though besides this, the version on Dell systems is packed with more applications and games.

However, while trying to install Google Chrome, NeoKylin pushed the installation backwards. Moreover, according to Quartz “It wasn’t just Chrome”.

To Push Windows 10 in China, Microsoft Partners with Baidu

China’s dodgy intentions on not installing Windows 8 raised a few eyebrows, some said because Windows 8 is expensive while some also said because of suspicion over American spying; reason why Windows 8 couldn’t make a landing in China.

China has always been cautious about the IT infrastructure of their country, even after updates and supports are closed 14-year old Windows XP is still in use in the majority of the systems in the country.

iPhone 6s, 6s Plus sell 13m in launch weekend

Boosted by China, Apple has broken the previous sales record it set with the launch of the iPhone 6
Apple announced today that its new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus have combined to sell 13 million units across the globe during the first weekend on sale. The figure breaks the previous sales record of 10 million units for the original iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, but it's worth noting that this time Apple did launch simultaneously in China whereas last time the phone didn't go on sale in China until October.

"Sales for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first weekend sales results in Apple's history," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "Customers' feedback is incredible and they are loving 3D Touch and Live Photos.

EA removes 13 female players from "FIFA 16" after NCAA concerns

EA is no stranger to issues with the NCAA, and this time FIFA 16 women's rosters are the culprit. The gaming studio announced today that following an NCAA notice, it would remove 13 players from the game that are currently on or "likely" to be on college rosters. "We believe this decision denies these 13 athletes the opportunity to represent their countries in the game, but we have removed them from FIFA 16 to ensure there is no risk to their eligibility," EA said in a blog post. While EA didn't compensate those players for appearing in the game, the NCAA says that including them would still jeopardize their ability to take the pitch for their respective schools. The group of players that won't make the game includes six players from Canada, six from Mexico and one from Spain (detailed info here). All 12 women's national teams are now playable with EA Access Play it First Trials.

Sony rebrands Morpheus as PlayStation VR

Sony rebrands Morpheus as PlayStation VR

Amongst a wealth of game trailers and reveals, Sony pushed a couple of relatively small hardware announcements at its pre-TGS show this morning, revealing a new range of coloured Vita models, interchangeable coloured faceplates for the PS4 and a rebranding of Project Morpheus.

The big news is that Morpheus will now be known as...PlayStation VR, which is at least descriptive. SCEJ president Atsushi Morita revealed the name change alongside a list of games and demos which will be playable on the device this week in Tokyo, which included: Final Fantasy 14 Online, Summer Lesson, Kitchen, Dynasty Warriors 7 VR demo, Rigs, Joysound VR, and a Hatsune Miku VR demo.

Morpheus is still due in the first half of 2016.

GameStop refuses to sell Consoles bundled with Digital Games

Gamestop released a rather interesting tidbit about their policy in carrying consoles with a digital title. In fact, they flat out said they refuse to carry them anymore. Here's the breakdown:

During a recent earnings report conference call, GameStop executives outlined their decision to move away from "digital" bundles and highlighted their recent effort to provide "physical" bundles instead. This new strategy went into effect just last month, with the release of Madden NFL 16. While other stores sold Xbox One and Playstation 4 bundles featuring digital copies of the football game, GameStop "worked with Sony, Microsoft, and EA" to reach an arrangement for the retailer to provide a physical copy with any new console purchased. This isn't just a little experiment either. GameStop COO Tony Bartel explained that if Sony and Microsoft continue to release digital bundles, GameStop will turn to "third party" physical-bundles. This could mean that they'll work out a deal with a major publisher like EA or Ubisoft to include a free physical copy of a recent release.

The first 8K TV will go on sale soon for over $130,000

Sharp has demonstrated Super Hi-Vision 8K displays before (as seen above during CES 2015), but today in Japan it announced an 85-inch version is going on sale October 30th. Dubbed the LV-85001, it's a monitor (it has a tuner so you could call it a TV, but that can't actually receive 8K video) for professional use only, mostly since there aren't really any broadcasts or content to watch in 8K.

Coming in at 16 times the resolution of 1080p screens, the 7,680 x 4,320 pixel LCD panel uses Sharp's IGZO technology. To actually watch any 8K video, you'll need to plug into all four of its HDMI inputs at once just to have enough bandwidth. If you're interested (and why wouldn't you be, even though there's almost nothing to watch), just contact Sharp's business-to-business sales unit, and bring along a check for 16,000,000 yen, or about $133,034 US.

Facebook to Add a 'Dislike' Button, Mark Zuckerberg Confirms

When a pet dies, or your friend's family member passed away, clicking the 'Like' button to express your sympathy doesn't feel comfortable.

Here a user feels a need of something to express their sadness, disagreement, anger, or something other than 'Like': Facebook should have an empathetic "Dislike" button - or something similar.

Is Facebook really thinking about adding a dislike button?

The short answer is "YES."

Soon your wish is about to come true. During a question and answer (Q&A) session on Tuesday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the Facebook 'dislike' button is on the way.

"People have asked about the 'dislike' button for many years," Zuckerberg told the audience at Facebook's Menlo Park office." Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we are working on it and shipping it."

Thirty Years of Super Mario - 13 September

Our dear plumbing friend, Mr. Mario Mario, has his 30th Super birthday celebration yesterday!

Yesterday Mario is probably beginning to notice he isn't 20 anymore, and has to start thinking about really settling down with Peach, maybe investing in a house, stopping her from getting kidnapped so they can start a family, and maybe making sure his brother Luigi doesn't rub how old he is in his face.

Yesterday was a day to celebrate all of the amazing memories and laughs we have shared with our good friend. Today, I want us all to share our first and latest memory with Mario. So we can reflect on the span of time Mario has impacted our lives, from the first jump, to hopefully the BILLIONTH jump.

Why Apple's New iPhone Won't Include Wireless Charging

1. The iPhone has an aluminum body.
The current wireless standards do not work through metal. The iPhone 6 has an aluminum body, and changing the entire body material from the iPhone 6 to (what is likely to be called) the iPhone 6S seems unlikely. However, Qualcomm did announce its WiPower wireless charging method this summer, a standard that enables wireless charging through metal.

2. Apple’s not ready yet.
As late as April of this year, Apple was still looking to hire a “senior wireless charging engineer,” and the job posting required “experience with WPC and PMA wireless standards.” Apple clearly already had the in-house knowledge to wireless charge, as the Apple Watch charges wirelessly. But the watch has much lower power requirements, and interoperability to existing chargers wasn’t even a consideration.

3. Apple doesn’t need to.
Apple’s iPhone is the industry market leader and the consumer darling. Apple doesn’t need to stuff features into its devices to boost sales. The masses are just learning about wireless charging. Apple’s approach appears to be “observe and see how wireless charging and the consumer experience plays out”. In the case of wireless charging, Apple’s fine with being on the cutting edge, not the bleeding edge.

4. History has shown that September iPhones are evolutionary, not revolutionary.
Keeping with Apple’s recent launch history, Sept. 9 will unveil the iPhone 6S. Typically the “S” models are incremental advancements. When Apple does wireless charging, it is going to do it in a way only Apple can. Will it remove wired charging altogether? What will the charging station look like?

Mortal Kombat X for 360 and PS3 cancelled

Mortal Kombat X for 360 and PS3 cancelled

Warner Bros. gives up on legacy generation ports for hit fighting game, cites quality concerns

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has crossed Mortal Kombat X for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 off its release list. On Friday, a WBIE community admin posted on the game's official forums, confirming something many had already suspected.

"After months of development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has come to the regrettable conclusion that we cannot release Mortal Kombat X for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360," the admin wrote. "Please know our teams worked diligently to meet the quality standards set by the current-gen versions of the game. We were not able to get the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions to the quality expected of a Mortal Kombat game and are very sorry for not being able to deliver the products as originally planned. "
